About

Men's golf at Electric Boat is part of the Electric Boat Athletic Club (EBAC). EBAC Men's Golf encompasses numerous activities and events such as the single elimination tournaments, Match Play and Four Ball, as well as the one day tournaments, Field Day and Old Timers Day. The main activity is the Men's Golf League which runs from late April until September. The EBAC Men's Golf League is a team sport. Each team is made up of anywhere between 9 to 13 players. The teams are broken into divisions based on skill level (i.e. average team handicap). Division 1 teams generally have the lowest average team handicaps out of all the divisions. There have been typically around 24 teams in the league, which results in 3 or 4 divisions of 6 to 8 teams.

Each week, each team plays a match, which involves 4 players from each team. Depending on your enthusiasm and your captain, you can play as much or as little as you want. The night of the match rotates through the week, Monday-Thursday with Friday reserved for make-up matches in case of rainouts. Matches are based on ten points where each player plays a person on the other team for two points. One point for match play and the other for medal play (net) which equals eight points plus another two points for total net team medal.

Teams will play other teams in their division two or three times depending on the size of the division. Typically teams play 14 or 15 matches a year (one match per week) starting in late April running into mid August followed by play-offs to determine the Division Champions and an overall League Champion.

HISTORY: Men's Golf at Electric Boat has been active since 1938 when the EBAC hosted its first Men's Golf Field Day. League play started in 1955 and was soon followed by the Match Play and Four Ball Tournaments, Old Timers Day and the Scotch Foursome Tournament. The "Varsity Team" was established in the mid 1960s and participated in The New England Industrial Golf Tournament.

TOURNAMENTS

EBAC Men's Golf organizes four tournaments during the year and are hosted at Shennecossett Golf Course. Click the tournament name for more details.

SIGN-UP: AUGUST 9TH - AUGUST 27TH / PLAY BEGINS: SEPTEMBER 10TH

The EBAC Field Day Tournament is an individual golf tournament played at Shennecossett Golf Course. Sign up at the EBAC office as a group or an individual. Individuals and groups of less than four will be paired to form foursomes. Prizes are awarded for low gross score, low net score, closest to the pin, and long drive.

SIGN-UP: AUGUST 16TH - SEPTEMBER 3RD / PLAY BEGINS: SEPTEMBER 17TH

The EBAC Old Timers Day Tournament is an individual golf tournament for ages 50+ played at Shennecossett Golf Course. Sign up at the EBAC office as a group or an individual. Individuals and groups of less than four will be paired to form foursomes.

SIGN-UP: JULY 5TH - JULY 23RD / PLAY BEGINS: AUGUST 9TH

The Match Play Tournament is an individual single elimination event where players are broken up into brackets (similar to the NCAA tournament). Brackets are ideally made up of 16 players grouped based on handicaps but typically byes are required depending on the number of people who sign up. Pairings will be drawn up and distributed to the participants. Each round is to be completed by the dates given on the brackets. Matches can be played any day of the week, it is up to the two players to contact each other and to set up their match. If possible, it is a good idea to try to coordinate your match with another so you can play as a foursome, but this isn't necessary and certainly shouldn't hold up playing the match as scheduled. It is a good idea to look at the EBAC League schedule to see if league matches are scheduled that day. You can schedule your match before or after league play and it is recommended you call the pro shop for a tee time.

The match is played similar to a regular league match for the "match" point based on 75% of the handicap differential (i.e. if you are a 9 and your opponent is a 6, your handicap differential is 3; 75% of that is 2.25 which rounds down to 2 so you get a stroke on the first two handicap holes). Once a player is "up" more holes than there are holes left to play, he has won. If the match is tied, players should proceed back to the first tee to play sudden death. If the first tee is crowded, players can opt to play their sudden death on the back nine but this must be mutually agreed upon since the tenth hole is the first stroke hole on the back.

Please report the results to the tournament coordinator and he will let you know who your next opponent is if it has been determined. The brackets will be emailed out periodically to keep people posted.

If for some reason you cannot play your match during the week scheduled, you may play it the following week but all attempts shall be made to play two matches that week to get the tournament back on schedule. If a situation arises where a player is backing up the tournament, the EBAC golf league reserves the right to forfeit that player out of the tournament.

Women play the forward tees and handicaps getting strokes on their handicap holes, men on their handicap holes. For example, on the 2nd hole (men's 4, Women's 5) no strokes given. Low score wins the hole, if the guy gets a 4 and the woman a 5, the man win the hole. Yes raw score, but strokes can be given on different holes.

SIGN-UP: JULY 5TH - JULY 23RD / PLAY BEGINS: AUGUST 9TH

The Four Ball Tournament is a single elimination, two person team event where teams are broken up into brackets (similar to the NCAA tournament). Brackets are ideally made up of 16 teams grouped based on handicaps but typically byes are required depending on the number of teams who sign up. Pairings will be drawn up and distributed to the participants. Each round is to be completed by the dates given on the brackets. Matches can be played any day of the week, it is up to the teams to contact each other and to set up their match. It is a good idea to look at the EBAC League schedule to see if league matches are scheduled that day. You can schedule your match before or after league play and it is recommended you call the pro shop for a tee time.

The match is handicapped and is played off the low handicappers ball based on 75% of the handicap differential (e.g. You are a 9 and your partner is a 5 and opponent A is a 8, and opponent B is a 6. Your partner is the low handicapper and you play off his ball (or handicap). The handicap differential between you and your partner is 4, 75% of that is 3 so you get a stroke on the first three handicap holes. The handicap differential between your partner and opponent A is 3, 75% is 2.25 which is rounded down to 2 so opponent A gets a stroke on the first two handicap holes and so on). Once a team is "up" more holes than there are holes left to play, they have won. If the match is tied, players should proceed back to the first tee to play sudden death. If the first tee is crowded, players can opt to play their sudden death on the back nine but this must be mutually agreed upon since the tenth hole is the first stroke hole on the back.

If for some reason you cannot play your match during the week scheduled, you may play it the following week but all attempts shall be made to play two matches that week to get the tournament back "on schedule". If a situation arises where a team is backing up the tournament, the EBAC League reserves the right to forfeit that team out of the tournament.

Women play the forward tees and handicaps getting strokes on their handicap holes, men on their handicap holes. For example, on the 2nd hole (men's 4, Women's 5) no strokes given. Low score wins the hole, if the guy gets a 4 and the woman a 5, the man wins the hole. Yes raw score, but strokes can be given on different holes.
